Environmental Facts

Cellulose Insulation has several key environmental advantages compared to other insulating products.

Reduces Operating Energy and Costs

Independent studies by universities and research labs have shown that on the basis of installed thermal protection performance, a cellulose insulated building will obtain better performance under real-world conditions than a typically insulated building of otherwise similar construction.

Good for the Atmosphere

Since less energy is used to install cellulose insulation, and the resulting buildings perform closer to calculated expectations (meeting or exceeding predicted values) their fuel savings translate into lower atmospheric emissions such as CO2 implicated in global warming, and other air-pollutants from electric power and on-site combustion sources known to produce acid-rain and smog.

High recycled content

(Typically 85% or greater) which reduces a major component of waste-stream to landfills – discarded newsprint.

Very low comparative ‘embodied energy’ and high levels of sequestered carbon

Cellulose insulation also has an excellent embodied carbon profile, as the trees used to make the newspaper absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. By converting waste newspapers into cellulose insulation, this carbon is locked into the building rather than being released to the atmosphere (reference: Customer report VTT-CR-01200-14).
